Macromedia products. First Mac, now Linux, what next?!

Scandalous! Macromedia products are ready for Linux. Well, the dudes that enable Windows apps to run on Linux have a new version that allows Flash and DW to run on the OS.

Macromedia's Red-headed stepchild?

I've been noticing a strange negligence on Macromedia's behalf when it comes to one of their children. And that child is ColdFusion. Is it scandalous, or absolutely nothin?

Now because this is a public survey I can mention something else curious. On the odd "beta application survey" that I've taken - ColdFusion is usually left out of the server software and languages that I use. PHP, ASP.NET, Java etc... they're all there. CFML? Usually not. I have to enter it in as my server or language of choice manually into the "Other" section. why? On Macromedia's own survey? Should I not be using their own language, the language of my favorite company? Am I really an "other" developer?*

Secondly, ColdFusion - like my name "deHaan" - is spelled incorrectly all the time. Now I expect that of those who don't know me. I'll accept DeHaan, Detlaan, and all the other names people attribute to me (unless they print it in a book and don't even bother to check beforehand on amazon or my site or something, which kinda irks me off a little). However, Macromedia mispelling ColdFusion is like my parents spelling my name wrong. It shouldn't happen. And yet it does -- right on the Macromedia blogs and at times in their documentation.

ColdFusion is one word, big "C" big "F". Just like deHaan is one word, small "d" big "H". Poor ColdFusion, its own parents spelling its name wrong.

*recently I took one where CFMX was mentioned, which is good. the prior survey that was almost identical didn't have it though.

Possible Flash Dot Release?

If you watch this:

Macromedia Quarterly Report

There is reference to a "dot release" for Flash being released in November in this Macromedia presentation/report. This could spell very good news for us developers and designers in a short period of time. It isn't terribly specific, so hopefully I haven't taken it out of context here.

iTunes for WINDOWS people

That's right, it's true. You can now have iTunes if you run Windows. I love iTunes, and found much better than many mp3 players for windows. In fact, ever since I got the Mac it has been my primary way of playing music. So, I was extremely happy to download iTunes for Windows today. Start itup - the scrollbar is even like the Mac. Pretty damn cool.

Check it out for yourself:

Tip of the Day Application Tutorial: Working with Web Services

Part 2 of my three part TUTORIAL on the Macromedia Developer Center has been put up. So what's it about? WebServiceConnector and data bindings, in a nutshell. Part One set up the application on screens and all that stuff (graphics, components and so forth). This part gets into the meat a little more and you make the app start to actually work.

"You will find out how to define web services, add them to your application, and process the results of a web service's methods. You'll also see how to use bindings in a FLA file using some of the new components. Part 2 shows you how to work with the WebServiceConnector component and how to bind data between this Data component to the other UI components that have been added to the Stage."

If you run the finished version of the app... it actually WORKs... just a note if you are sending test notes. If you want to use the service on your own web site, please just send me an quick email letting me know where you are - and all I request is a link back on the app saying that the service was provided by "flash-mx.com". Thanks.

PART TWO:

Part Two.

WORKING APPLICATION:

Tip of the Day. By the way... this thing is WORKING, so you can really send tips using it.

FLVbrowser preview

Check out this preview of an FLV browser over at MX traveller.

FLV Browser.

Owen van Dijk is developing this FlVbrowser using C# and .NET. This tool enables you to preview your FLV files without having to open them using Flash. This solves a LOT of problems for me, so I really can't wait to hear more about the development of this! Go to the link to read more.

Flash Remoting Connector

A Flash Remoting connector component has been developed. Nicely complements the other data connection components, and while I haven't tried it out yet I have heard it works very nicely.

FlashRemotingConnector.

Justin Watkins put this component together for the likes of all of ya, and the MXP made by Owen van Dijk. Enjoy, and please feel free to comment on how you find the component and what you're using it for!

Sending Feedback on the release.

If you have bugs or issues to report about Flash MX 2004, please head over to Mike Chambers' blog here to provide your feedback

http://www.markme.com/mesh/archives/003385.cfm. Post your feedback in the comments.

You input is important at this stage - I'm guessing that they are determining a course of "action"... but that's just a guess. So if you find things great, horrible or somewhere in between please take a second to post and tell 'em why you think that.
