Check out some of the new features that will happen in the second release of the Unity socket server:
~~~~~~~~~~ there is a nice chat app that was built using Unity 2. Code on the client side. Check it out at www.moock.org.~~~~~~~~~~
You might find this note on cross domain loading/the sandbox useful. This is one of the "less-documented" areas of Flash MX (ie: the entire System/System.security is not terribly well documented anywhere). Regardless, check it out. Hopefully it should clear some things up for you.
This new reader allows you to import FreeHand files into Flash MX. It's good for FreeHand 8 - MX. A "first-party importer" essentially. This is very handy if you design vector graphics and want to bring 'em straight into Flash. There is some more information on the above link (with a warning for you Mac users).
Thanks Macromedia =)
"Escalate" - Digital Photography, New Media Design and the Visual Culture.
Toronto, Canada, February 18, 2003 - After two and a half months of collaboration, creativity and hard work the latest project from Art Directors Anonymous (ADA) is set to launch. This new (web) installation features the work of fifteen Canadian new media artists, who set out to explore, experiment and push the boundaries of digital photography through innovation.
The Digital Camera, has quickly become a leading edge instrument of modern day creativity and a staple in the new media visual communications toolbox. Since digital photography's first inception into the new media artist's skill set, we have witnessed the coming of age of a fresh perspective in twenty first century imagery. It's ease of use in allowing us to capture a candid, unrehearsed view of life and our environment through an honest and unaltered light is unparalleled. We are a generation who deliberately challenges the norm. We find inspiration in the world around us and rejoice in exposing the raw beauty hidden in the fringes of life.
About the Artists
Fifteen individuals were invited to produce a sixty second flash movie using just their digital camera and imagination. Those involved were: Alison Hladkyj, Carole Guevin, Craig Nickel, Curtis Achilles, Eric Vardon, Jason Chesebrough, Jen Dehaan, Jon Lorenz, Lee Cobham, Matthew Wearn, Padrin Kwok, Paul Edward Fleming, Phil De Paulis, Richard Carmichael and Robin Davies. A full bio of each artist along with comments on there work can be found along side their respective movies.
Check out this area of Macromedia for new information on the DevNet subscriptions. The DevNet subscription comes in two flavours: Essentials, and Professional. Professional gets you upgrades of the Studio MX suite automatically, although it is rather expensive. The DevNet Essentials gets you DRKs 4 times a year. Oh, and emails and the flash player (?? don't quite get that....).
Anyway, click and find out if this is useful. Comments encouraged.
More information on DevNet subscriptions from Mike Chambers. Seems as though the entire name has finally changed from DesDev to DevNet -- developers won. There was a race?
Escalate is just about finished -- a collection of various artists and their stop-motion photography work in Flash. Some great work there indeed, and quite inspirational. I'd also like to give the shouts out to the people at artdirectorsanonymous who made a kick ass interface for it all.
My entry (jen dehaan) is still a work in progress, and is certainly not one of the inspirational ones. Any comments/suggestions more than welcome though.
Jeremy Allaire, founder of Allaire and co-creator of ColdFusion, is leaving Macromedia for new persuits in Boston. His long message can be read here.
Good luck to you Jeremy.
Don't quite check out the new site yet - it was taken down last night (it didn't quite work yet), and the old site was eventually put back up...
everything's down at the moment...
But perhaps we'll catch the new site soon. Stay tuned.
What do you all think of DesDev being changed to "DevNet"? Comments?
Macromedia has finally released the new version of their site. Currently, they are porting over all the pages, so it is not fully working yet. Should be by tomorrow. Macromedia.com.
A lot more Flash, a little bit more color, some changes, seemingly a new product. Your DesDev is now DevNet (designers are out! eek!)
