It's easy to tell that digital photography has a definite hold over the camera industry. Models of varying quality, features, and price are available on the market for all kinds of consumers. Many of those people are looking for a simple solution to edit those photos, whether it is cropping, correcting colors or manipulating the images in other fun ways. Perhaps you want to organize your pictures on your Mac or create a collage: this book shows you how.

This title on taking and manipulating digital photography on the Mac is an excellent book on digital photography on the Mac, from taking the pictures to editing them in today's popular photo editing software. Photoshop Elements 2 is used to manipulate photos to make them look better, or for fun! Also, you will find out how to print your photos, create photo albums and even a slide show. I have a lot of background in this particular subject, but I found a lot of great info in this book (I usually use Photoshop instead of Elements - it was a nice surprise to find out how capable this inexpensive program is!)

Mac Digital Photography is written in a fun and friendly, yet professional manner. You will learn a variety of techniques in many short examples. I hesitate to call them tutorials, because most of these examples are essentially a short number of steps that are between 1 and a few sentences in length. There are also many bulleted lists that contain useful definitions and explainations.

Both of these formats are very easy to learn from. If you are uncomfortable with image editing, you will definitely find this book easy to follow because of this. You won't get bogged down in long and complex tutorials - the examples are short and concise, and very easy to follow. The best feature of this book is how useful it is to beginners; however, it will also benefit people who are more advanced computer users - but who might never have taken a close look at really how to go about making their digital pictures look better. Cropping, editing and color correction can make a crappy picture 100% better.

What I found as an unexpected bonus was a wealth of projects and crafts that you could create using your digital camera. This is something I have not done much work with at all (apart from printing my photos on fancy papers). Finding out how to create greeting cards and other projects was a nice surprise, and the projects were presented in a clear and fun way by the author(s).

Topics that this book covers are:

  • Taking pictures (depth, composition and lighting)
  • Cameras and Equipment
  • iPhoto
  • Photoshop Elements
  • Photo editing
  • Printing your photos
  • Putting photos on CDs or DVDs
  • Sharing pictures (video, email)
  • Crafts and projects (stickers, books, cards, and other assorted projects)
  • This book is for you if you want to learn how to take better pictures, and edit them so you can present pictures that look a LOT better. You'll also find out how to manipulate the pictures and share them with others. If you have purchased a digital camera and want to find out how to use it with your Mac then this book is certainly worth picking up.

This book is not for you if you are primarily looking for a book that includes a lot of information on taking photographs with a digital camera. The section on this particular subject is short and somewhat limited if you are looking for focus on it. Approximately 30 pages are devoted to taking photos, and another 30ish on the equipment.

Mac Digital Photography is a black and white book with a color section, and is 280 pages - so it isn't a long one. It is printed on high quality paper, which is a great benefit to the subject of the book and its contents. The photos and examples are very nice and clear, due to a high quality print job. A CD-ROM is included with the book, containing a weath of software for the Mac, and the files you need to follow along with the tutorials.

For it's high quality and overall usefulness, flash-mx.com gives this book (5/5).

    Rating: (5/5).
